Placing Dental Crowns Stuart, FL
A dental crown is a covering that repairs a tooth that is chipped or cracked. It is a permanent fixture that does not move, slip or fall out, allowing it to last up to 10 years. It has the added benefit of protecting a tooth against bacterial infection and decay. At Colin M. McKinney, DMD we make dental crown fitting a quick and streamlined procedure. Our dentists, Dr. Colin M. McKinney and Dr. McKinney, make your comfort their top priority while ensuring your crown is fitted properly and securely.
Placing a dental crown is a two-part process that takes at least two sessions. The first part involves preparing your tooth. Depending on the extent of damage, we may have to remove pieces of your tooth using a dental drill. This is a relatively painless procedure, but we will use a numbing agent to keep you at ease. Once the tooth is smooth and dried out, we will begin the casting process.
Casting involves taking an impression of the tooth and the surrounding teeth, which is then used by our dental lab to build your permanent crown. Depending on your requirements, we will make a mold or do a digital scan of the area. Additionally, we will do a color match to make sure your crown blends in with surrounding teeth. While your crown is being made, we will place a temporary crown over your tooth to keep it safe.
We recommend avoiding hard or sticky food during this time as it will dislodge the temporary crown. Within a week, your permanent dental crown will be ready, and we will fit it in your follow-up appointment. Initially, the crown may feel uncomfortable, as if something extra is in your mouth, but this feeling will go away over the next 24 hours as you get used to it. Before leaving, we will ensure your bite is correct, and if necessary, we will reshape the crown to ensure it fits precisely.
What Are Same Day Crowns?
Same day crowns are dental crowns that are made and fitted in a single session. When you come in to prepare your tooth, we will make a digital impression of your oral cavity. That scan will make a crown out of a ceramic block while you are still in our clinic. There will be no need for a temporary crown while you wait. Once it is ready, this permanent crown will be cemented on your tooth, and you are done. There is no second appointment.
Types of Dental Crowns
There are a variety of dental crowns available, made of different materials that include:
• |
Stainless Steel
|
• |
Metal
|
• |
Ceramic
|
• |
Porcelain Fused to Metal
|
• |
Resin |
Here at Colin M. McKinney, DMD, we find that ceramic crowns are one of the best choices for a majority of our patients, especially for teeth that are toward the front of the mouth and more visible. The benefits of ceramic crowns over other types include their longer durability, superior strength, and overall look. They can be colored-matched precisely to surrounding teeth and, with proper care, last over 10 years. Alternatively, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are reinforced with a metal substructure making them a good option for restoring molars.
