Dentistry for Kids
Stuart, FL

Children visiting our dentist at an early age is important for many different reasons. The sooner that a child can visit the dentist through regular checkups, the healthier their mouth and teeth will be throughout their lives. Dentist visits at a young age help prevent things such as cavities and tooth decay that can lead to pain, and things such as trouble concentrating and other underlying medical issues.

According to the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, taking a child to the dentist by the age of one or as soon as the first tooth is developed is important in maintaining a child's oral health. By taking your child to visit Dr. McKinney here at Colin M. McKinney, DMD, you can take preventative measures that will last a lifetime.

Why Dentistry for Kids is Important

While taking your child to the dentist as soon as possible is important for them, it is even more important to do so as a parent. When doing this, you are putting your child's health first, and you will even learn things that you might be doing that are causing problems with their oral health. For example, letting your child fall asleep with a bottle of juice, milk, or any other drink can cause decay.

As a parent, you may want to begin the use and encouragement of regular cups to avoid this problem. In the United States, chronic tooth decay is the biggest oral health problem facing children. To avoid problems like this, starting early habits of brushing the teeth for two minutes, twice a day and flossing once a day can keep cavities and decay lower than the average child.

Although our first set of teeth to grow are not permanent, they play an important role in how our adult teeth develop and how we take care of them. Establishing good dental hygiene at a young age will help our adult teeth grow better, look better, and feel better. While it is usually overlooked, dentistry for kids paves a path for healthy teeth and gums as adults.

Choosing the Right Dentist for Your Child

Fear of the dentist usually starts at a young age and is often because the child is frightened or hurt by the dentist doing a dental exam. Taking your child to a pediatric dentist or a kid-friendly dentist will help eliminate the fear of a dentist because they understand how to handle children better.

Making sure Dr. McKinney knows that your child has never been or is afraid will help the cleaning and exam go much more smoothly. Choosing a dentist that is patient and offers ways to visit more fun for your child will keep them from fearing the dentist and may even make them enjoy the time spent there. To keep your child from having a fear of visiting the dentist, making sure that you show them how to properly take care of their teeth can prevent this.
