Invisalign®
Stuart, FL

Having straight teeth is something that most people dream of. Dentists will suggest braces at a young age to ensure teeth grow in straight and aligned. However, some patients are unable to afford braces and over time, want to try and align their teeth as adults. A relatively new option available to patients today is known as Invisalign®. This product is a custom-made aligner that will be changed out at particular intervals to help straighten teeth. Here at Colin M. McKinney, DMD, we can provide you with more information on Invisalign and determine if the option is right for you.

Invisalign is similar to a retainer as it helps to keep teeth in position, so they cannot shift out of place. The orthodontic treatment is a technique used to move and align teeth, so you have a beautiful smile. The clear aligner is not as noticeable as traditional braces and is fitted to cover each patients teeth perfectly.

Invisalign Versus Traditional Braces

Invisalign is considered a more convenient method for straightening teeth than traditional braces. Patients need to make only minor changes in their daily life to accommodate the treatment option. With this aligner, patients will need to remove the piece when brushing their teeth, flossing, eating and drinking.

With braces, the appliance cannot be removed. Because of the components of braces, patients are unable to eat certain foods such as popcorn, beef jerky, corn on the cob, etc., as the particles of food can become stuck in the braces.

With Invisalign, the appliance is transparent. The piece goes unnoticed and helps to maintain the natural look of your smile without the metal brackets and wires associated with braces. The plastic piece is also gentle on the mouth, not causing any harm to cheeks or gums. With braces, patients may cut the inside of their mouth or scrape it due to the sharp edges of the braces.

Candidates for Invisalign

Unlike braces, not all patients will be a candidate for Invisalign. There are dental problems that cannot be solved with this treatment method. If you have a malocclusion or a bite that is badly aligned, then braces will be the solution. Invisalign is best to treat certain dental problems, including gapped teeth, small bite issues like an overbite, underbite, open bite or crossbite. Crowded teeth can also be an issue that Invisalign can repair.

Consultation for Invisalign

To see if Invisalign is right for you, a consultation is needed. Our office can provide you with Invisalign information, reviewing your dental history and examining your teeth to see if the product will be the best option for creating a new smile. If you fit the criteria, then we can help create an Invisalign product that will be used to straighten your teeth.

An appliance will be placed in your mouth that is custom fit to your teeth. You will need to change out the appliance every few weeks with a new one to ensure your teeth are moving in the right direction, on our way to a straighter smile.
